Contract and taxes
Looking for the best price, quite a few forest owners are tempted by offers from illegally operating “logging companies” that offer a few euros more per hectare than legally and transparently operating companies. Every legally operating company will always sign a contract before taking any action, stating all company details, the method and timing of payment.
When selling standing timber, the company will withhold the taxes due to the state from your payment – so when signing the contract it is worth asking whether the stated sum is what you will actually receive or whether taxes will still be deducted from it. A tax liability can also arise when selling forest with land if you have owned it for less than 3 years.
