According to data as of 1 January 2015, forests covered 33.4% of Lithuania's territory. Compared with 2003 statistics, forested area in Lithuania increased by slightly more than 2%.
Pine forests occupy the largest area in Lithuania – of the total forest area of 2,179.9 thousand ha, pine stands cover 718.6 thousand ha, and in recent years the area covered by these trees has kept growing. The area of the other conifer – spruce – has decreased by as much as 16 thousand ha over the past 12 years. Among broadleaves, birch stands make up the largest share, followed by black alder, grey alder and only then the oaks that symbolise our strength.
So the area of some tree species has grown over the past decade or so, while that of others has, conversely, decreased. This is influenced by felling, the speed of replanting, and the situation and protection of forests growing in different zones. The state of Lithuania's forests depends both on the state, which in some cases must take measures at the national level, and on private forest owners, who are responsible for the condition of the forest they own and may carry out the activities provided for by law in it.
